University of Beira Interior

History: The first steps on the way to what is now the University of Beira Interior (UBI) were given in the 70's, when he was born the Polytechnic Institute of Covilha (IPC) in 1973. The city, once regarded as "Portuguese Manchester", by long tradition, dynamics and quality of their wool, was hit in this decade, a crisis for industry: large and small plants begin to reveal serious weaknesses that could lead to its closure, with disastrous social and economic consequences for the region.
