It was a Joint Order of 1983 of the Secretariat of State for Higher Education and the Regional Secretariat of Education, then tutored by Dr. Eduardo Castro Coat of Arms, which created "a commission in order to study the feasibility of establishing and operating a university in the Region Madeira and / or other institutional alternatives. Three years later, through Decree-Law 319-A/88 of September 13, 1988, was born the University of Madeira, part of the first Member of the Installation Committee Chairman Prof. Dr. Raul de Albuquerque Sardinha, the Professor Vowels. Were approved, even during the period of the first Installation Committee, the Bylaws of the University of Madeira. Following on from a troubled period that led to the Voting Member President asked his resignation, was appointed a new Installation Committee constituted by Prof. Dr. Fernando Santos Henriques, one of the vowels preceding commission however assumed the presidency, by Professor Vowels. Forwarded New University after examined by the Commission for Consideration of Association (the so-called Commission Ferrer), in order to carry out some changes, if work resumed on 9 February 1996 until its final version, read and approved on March 14 next. With the approval of the Statutes of the University by His Excellency the Minister of Education, Prof.. Dr. Marcal Grilo, Building Amphitheater in College on 13 May 1996 and subsequent election of charge for the next two years, the University of Madeira has entered a new and crucial phase of his life. A phase that should see the University assert itself in the national context, as University of right and achieve at their level internal changes to meet minimum major challenges ahead for any institution of higher education on the threshold of XXI century.
