The University of Tras-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) was born in 1986 and by the University Institute ancestor of Tras-os-Montes and Alto Douro, created in 1979, which in turn succeeded the Polytechnic Institute of Vila Real, originated in 1973. The UTAD is headquartered in Vila Real, with extensions in Chaves and Miranda do Douro, predicting it will soon open an extension in the city of Lamego.
